GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) is a standard protocol defined by the International Telecommunication Union, Telecom committee (ITU-T) as G.984. GPON extends the earlier G.983 Broadband PON (BPON) standard by increasing both the downstream and upstream bandwidth, providing a more bandwidth-efficient encapsulation method using GPON encapsulation method (GEM), making the transport more packet based, providing a more scalable management method using ONT Management Control Interface (OMCI) and improving on the encryption and Forward Error Control (FEC) methods. This has been designed from the ground up to be a carrier-class optical network designed to deliver triple-play services (voice, video, and data) from a Central Office to individual businesses.
